Introduced in April 2020 early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Store to Door’s Friendly Caller program aims to allow Clients to develop ongoing relationships with Volunteer Callers to help combat social isolation. Following its initial great reception among both clients and volunteers, we have adapted the program into our weekly operations.

According to the National Council on Aging, more than one fifth of adults in the U.S. identify as lonely, isolated, or both. According to a report from the National Academies of Sciences, that number is even higher among older adults; nearly one quarter of adults 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.

Each Friday, Store to Door volunteers have more than 100 conversations with clients across the Portland area. While these conversations are designed to be informal and personal, callers are also equipped to check in on client welfare and provide referrals to services that go beyond our program scope, such as home repairs, assistance paying bills, and medical support.

You can support our Friendly Caller Program, and the other vital work that Store to Door does supporting homebound members of our community, by donating to our Stories of Strength campaign today!
